The Medina City Schools Foundation manages more than 60 individual scholarships and the scholarship funds that support those scholarships that are annually given to the District’s students with the assistance from the Stellar accounting and reporting system at The Huntington National Bank. The Foundation administers the scholarships in collaboration with the District each year.

A list of the Foundation’s scholarships, with their criteria and financial award is provided below for your information. Please read the criteria for each of the scholarships at the time of application. There may be additional information that you are responsible to supply, depending on the scholarship for which you are applying.

Overview

In memory of Carol Valeriano Matozzo, who demonstrated a relentless spirit and level of participation in support of Medina athletics during her nine year battle with breast cancer.

Write a short (2 page max) essay that describes one of these two situations: (a) describe a hardship that you have experienced in your lifetime and how you and your family dealt with it, or (b) describe the support of your coaches and teams during your time in Medina athletics.

Overview

In memory of valued teacher and coach for Medina City Schools for 12 years, Dan Sherman. He had an incredible energy for life and passion to make students better people in the classroom, on the field, and beyond. “Shermanate” means to care for others, putting their needs before your own.

The scholarship is in honor of John P. Kelly. He was a teacher who tirelessly advocated for the voiceless, fervently believed in everyone’s potential, and indefatigably taught lessons that reached far beyond the classroom. This scholarship honors his lifelong love of teaching, learning, and giving.

Math Department Scholarship

Overview

The Math Department Scholarship is given annually to a graduating senior that is planning to major in Mathematics Education (Teaching) or Mathematics in college. The scholarship was founded by Mr. John Berger, a retired math teacher at and former head of the Department of Math at Medina High School and his wife Laura Berger. The recipient’s GPA, character, work ethic, integrity, and financial aid will be considered. In addition, the applicant must submit a brief essay as to why the applicant believes he/she/or they are qualified for the scholarship as well as providing two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a math teacher at the High School. The recipient will be chosen each year by a committee consisting of the Head of the Math Department and two math teachers. If the recipient is a varsity baseball player or softball player for one year then an additional $100 bonus will be added to the $700 award.
