The Medina City Schools Foundation manages more than 60 individual scholarships and the scholarship funds that support those scholarships that are annually given to the District’s students with the assistance from the Stellar accounting and reporting system at The Huntington National Bank. The Foundation administers the scholarships in collaboration with the District each year.
A list of the Foundation’s scholarships, with their criteria and financial award is provided below for your information. Please read the criteria for each of the scholarships at the time of application. There may be additional information that you are responsible to supply, depending on the scholarship for which you are applying.
Applicant must write an essay “If you know you are of Hungarian heritage, please describe it.”
Send a MHS Junior or Senior to a Basketball Camp equivalent to Bobby Knight Basketball Camp or to assist a Basketball player from MHS in furthering their education. This is to be determined by Medina Basketball Coaches, the Principal and the Athletic Director.
In memory of Carol Valeriano Matozzo, who demonstrated a relentless spirit and level of participation in support of Medina athletics during her nine year battle with breast cancer.
Write a short (2 page max) essay that describes one of these two situations: (a) describe a hardship that you have experienced in your lifetime and how you and your family dealt with it, or (b) describe the support of your coaches and teams during your time in Medina athletics.
Please write an essay detailing your volunteer experience.
In memory of valued teacher and coach for Medina City Schools for 12 years, Dan Sherman. He had an incredible energy for life and passion to make students better people in the classroom, on the field, and beyond. “Shermanate” means to care for others, putting their needs before your own.
Describe how Mr. Sherman has impacted your life in some way. This can be personal, academic or athletic. Turn in essay to Mrs. Cavalier in White Guidance by application deadline date.

The family of Jillian Schrader Towne honors her life as the mother of two Medina High School graduates and her career as a lifelong math teacher at the middle school, high school and college levels with this scholarship.
“Why do you want to teach math?”
The scholarship is in honor of John P. Kelly. He was a teacher who tirelessly advocated for the voiceless, fervently believed in everyone’s potential, and indefatigably taught lessons that reached far beyond the classroom. This scholarship honors his lifelong love of teaching, learning, and giving.
The applicant should answer the following questions (a) What do you dream for or fear?, (b) What is a detail you remember from a a really good (or bad day)?, (c) Outside of your family, who or what do you love most and why?, and (d) can you whistle? and, if so, what is your favorite song to whistle?
Girl Lacrosse Player that demonstrates the qualities of kindness, dependability and excellent work ethic and strives to constantly do better in all aspects of life.
Write and essay about how a team sport will help prepare you for your purpose in life.
“What tutoring has meant to you and how this scholarship will benefit your college pursuits”
500 words or less
Potential applicants will be reviewed based upon past or current athletic participation, academic achievement, financial need and overall school activity participation. The winners are chosen by the Athletic Director, Guidance Counselor, & a Karson Family Representative.
In memory of Letha House who established a trust fund in 1963 to assist students in funding college education.
Applicants must be planning to continuing their education in the field of education, be accepted to a college or university, write an essay and have a teacher recommendation.
The Math Department Scholarship is given annually to a graduating senior that is planning to major in Mathematics Education (Teaching) or Mathematics in college. The scholarship was founded by Mr. John Berger, a retired math teacher at and former head of the Department of Math at Medina High School and his wife Laura Berger. The recipient’s GPA, character, work ethic, integrity, and financial aid will be considered. In addition, the applicant must submit a brief essay as to why the applicant believes he/she/or they are qualified for the scholarship as well as providing two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a math teacher at the High School. The recipient will be chosen each year by a committee consisting of the Head of the Math Department and two math teachers. If the recipient is a varsity baseball player or softball player for one year then an additional $100 bonus will be added to the $700 award.
Award given to an individual who has “never given up in the face of insurmountable odds” and always puts the team above individual honors.
Awarded to one member of each boys and girls cross country team.
State your aspirations for the future. Why do you feel you have earned this scholarship? Letters and essays must be turned in to Mrs. Platz in the main office by the application deadline date.
“Around Medina (Photo Essay) What does Medina mean to you? What are your goals in life and how would you plan on using the funds from the scholarship to further those goals? (300 word minimum)”
Applicants are to submit up to five digital photographs depicting “Around Medina” theme. Photos should be taken within and represent Medina County. Winning applicant will have photos displayed in Sinick Family Dental office and may be used on website and social media. All submitted photographs should be suitable for a dental office.
