Providing free tutoring to Medina High School students for more than 30 years.

The Joyce B. Ebner Tutoring Center was created in 1991 to provide FREE tutoring to high school students  who have the desire to improve in any subject.  The goal of the program is to build a positive student self image based on greater self confidence and improved competence in a given subject area. Using a tutor can help in a specific subject area, promote better reading comprehension, develop stronger study skills, help grasp concepts in a subject, improve grades and build confidence.

Students may request a tutor in any subject offered by the High School.  Application forms can be found at The Hub, in the Tutoring Center (Room 1300 next to the Media Center)  or on line on the school website.  Once applications are received, students are then matched with an honor student in that subject matter.  All National Honor Society members are required to tutor as their service project.  We also use other honor students in any grade to help with the large number of requests.  Tutoring is twice a week, though sometimes the pairs agree to meet more often.

We also provide what we call the Math Lab.  This is where we have high school Math teachers in the room who work with the students.  They help with all levels of math from basic Algebra to Advanced Placement Calculus.  The amount of Math teachers varies each year.  This year we currently have six teachers who are helping our Math students. They also are scheduled to meet twice a week.

The Tutoring Center program has grown tremendously over the years.  Currently, we now service approximately 150 students a day.  Total students in the program overall tops 500.  Students not only receive help with their studies but their tutors are wonderful role models.  Many students have found the Tutoring Center to be a safe haven, a quiet place to study and a comfortable atmosphere.  We have created a  “second home” to many students here in the Joyce B. Ebner Tutoring Center.
